Cloudflare's Agent Stack: Email, Traces, and Now Wallets
Cloudflare’s email, tracing and wallet announcements explained for business owners: what software can do, and where a person still needs to decide.

Cloudflare is building tools that let AI software send email, record its activity and, through announced wallet features, make payments within limits. You do not need to run a technology company for that to matter: these capabilities may appear in the business software you already use.
This article explains the business questions behind the announcements. The examples are our interpretation of where oversight is useful, rather than a recommendation to adopt a particular product.
Email: software can take part in a conversation
Cloudflare’s Email Service announcement describes sending and receiving email for applications and AI agents. An agent is software that carries out a series of actions towards a goal.
For a business, that could mean following up an enquiry or preparing a reply using information from another system. The useful question is where that conversation needs a person. A routine confirmation may be straightforward; a complaint or a request outside policy deserves a defined handoff.
Before switching on automated replies, agree which messages can be sent, which need checking and who receives the exceptions. Test the difficult examples as well as the ordinary ones.
Traces: a record of what happened
Cloudflare’s Agent Development Lifecycle announcement includes tools for observing agent activity. Its local tracing guide explains how developers can inspect records of a system’s steps during development.
A trace is a record that helps answer “what happened on this job?” Your IT provider may use it to find why an order failed or why the wrong information was returned. It is different from the business record of who approved a decision and why; you may need both.
Ask your provider what you can see when something goes wrong, who reviews those records and how a recurring problem gets fixed.
Wallets: spending needs an agreed limit
In its 4 August 2026 wallet announcement, Cloudflare opened handle registration and described future account and virtual wallets. The planned controls included allowances, permitted merchants and transaction limits. The announcement distinguished registering an identity from later payment features.
The business lesson is familiar: giving software the ability to spend needs clear authority. Someone must decide the permitted purpose, the limit and who considers an exception. A spending cap can restrict an amount; it cannot decide whether a purchase makes sense for your business.
Check current availability and the terms with your provider before considering a payment feature. This article is about the oversight question, rather than instructions to use a wallet.
More capability means more decisions to make
These developments suggest that business software will take on more complete tasks. Our view is that the operating rules need to become just as clear: what the system can do, what it must check and what it must pass to a person.
For an SME, it is reasonable to start with a single process and a small set of permissions. Review the results before extending what the software is allowed to do.
Who takes care of the exceptions?
A useful control needs someone behind it. If a message is flagged, a payment limit is reached or a record does not match, the business needs a person who knows what to do next.
That may be a manager for a reserved decision, or an employed team member for a check or follow-up within agreed limits. Human in the loop support makes that responsibility part of the process.
Our guide to the four checking patterns can help you decide where people belong. Your IT provider can use the technical documentation to discuss the connection with us.
